5 Friday Favorites: October 26, 2018

Happy Friday, Friends.

It's time for my Friday link up with A Little Bit of EverythingGrace and Love, and Momfessionals

On Fridays I share things that made me happy from the week - a photo, a song, a quote, a beauty product, a recipe, a pair of cute shoes, etc. If it's a product, sometimes it's something I actually own and sometimes something I just saw online that gave me a smile. Sometimes it's serious and sometimes it's silly. I suppose I believe that God is in the simple details of life and yes, I can even find Him in a tube of lipstick.

1. BP Stitch Curve Hem Cardigan

I bought this cardigan during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this summer and I have worn the fire out of it in the past few weeks. The weather is just starting to get cold here, but lately, I go from being sure I'm going to lose my toes to the cold to deciding that I'm about to burst into flames all within the same 30 minute period. Being almost 50 years old is so much fun and not confusing at all. ;-) The key to this season in my life has been layering. I basically put this cardigan on and throw it off about 20 times a day. It's soft, has pockets, and is stretchy enough to wrap tight around you when you need it, but light weight enough not to suffocate you. Also, if you search for the blue feather color, it is 40% off today.

2. Where the Crawdads Sing

I know I mentioned this book last week, but I was barely into it at the time and I have to list it again because IT IS SO GOOD. I don't know where this Delia Owens came from but her use of the English language is so beautiful and so unique that it takes my breath away. (And I realize "takes my breath away" is the least unique thing to say in all the world, but I can't come up with anything more accurate right now.) When I was reading in between baseball games this weekend, my eyes immediately filled up with tears when the main character is finally learning to read:

Slowly, she unraveled each word of the sentence: " 'There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot.' "

"Oh," she said. "Oh."

"You can read, Kya. There will never be a time again when you can't read."

"It ain't just that." She spoke almost in a whisper. "I wadn't aware that words could hold so much. I didn't know a sentence could be so full."

Oh my gosh, that just makes me bawl my eyes out. I know, right, Kya?

3. Dr. Scholl's Wander Up Slip On Sneaker

I had a coupon at DSW that was about to expire and I wanted a slip on shoe. Flat shoes can be uncomfortable for me because I have a pretty high arch, but these are amazing. I've worn them  almost everyday since I bought them.

4. Spornette Round Hair Brush

I love this brush. My hairdresser (i.e. beauty operator, if you're my mom and her Texan girlfriends) sold me a Spornette brush so many years ago that if you saw it today you'd want to stage an intervention. For some reason the Lord opened my eyes this week and unfortunately, I discovered that unless I wanted to conduct a science experiment in my bathroom drawer, it was time for a new brush. I'm guessing that after so many years, this one is a new version, but I'm hoping we will have a flourishing long term relationship just as I had with my first one.

5. My Catcher

It was way too cold for baseball this past weekend. The high on Sunday in Hershey, PA was 40-something and the wind was brutal. I had on three shirts, long underwear, a coat, scarf, gloves, a hat and toe warmers stuck in my shoes. As I set up my chair and hunkered down into my seat with my blanket, I got a text from a friend to our group - a gang of women with whom I've sat in the bleachers on and off for ten years. Her high school senior was playing in his very last out of town travel baseball game and she found herself in the same type of weather with the joy of a port-a-potty as her only restroom option. She texted that she was ready to high tail it out of there with a "So long, Suckahs!", but then immediately mentioned how thankful she was for all the laughter, tears and warm blankets our baseball mom group had shared throughout the years.

So I took that as a challenge to be grateful for the fact that I've got a few more years to bundle myself up behind home plate. In our final game I sat up close to the fence so I could hear and see everything as my little man played catcher. I watched him chat with the ump, encourage his pitcher, glance intently at the dugout to focus on his coach's instruction, and in general, just smile his way through a freezing cold championship game. The cold didn't seem so bad once I focused on him.

I'll simply never get over how much I love to watch them play.

However, I think we'd all agree that it's time to wrap this up, Fall Baseball Season. I'm ready for the squeak of shoes on a gym floor, a warm place in the bleachers and the chance to shout, "AND-ONE!"as often as I possibly can. Bring it on, Basketball Season. I'm ready.

Bonus Favorite

I don't know who sent me this or when, but I've turned to it a bunch of times since and it was pretty encouraging to me.  I've got a lot of friends going through some stuff lately and maybe you are, too. 100% track record is pretty good. I'd bet we can do it again, don't you?

Have a great weekend.
