Hello, Friends.
Just when we thought that things couldn't get worse, the list of horrific events that have happened in our country and around the world grew in the past seven days. So to start this post, I just want to acknowledge the heaviness and sadness because launching into listing things like yoga tops and binge-worthy tv shows right off the bat seemed like the wrong thing to do. However, I will proceed with my my usual nonsense - mainly, because I am well aware that no one is showing up here to read thought-provoking political commentary or analysis of our government's leadership capabilities. If you were expecting that, you have taken a wrong turn.
I am praying so much for so many every day. May the Lord have mercy on us.
In light of all the sad, I think the only way to start this first post of September on the right foot is to watch Paul Rudd dance to Earth, Wind & Fire's most famous hit. I NEED YOU TO KNOW (IN ALL CAPS) THAT IF YOU SKIP THIS IT WILL BE A GRAVE ERROR ON YOUR PART.
I've watched it about seven times in the last few days, and I highly recommend that you do so as well. Then, and only then, should you proceed to the rest of my favorites for this week.
Ok. Ready? Let's go.
1. Yoga Tops
When the pandemic first began, I discovered Yoga with Adriene online. She has a ton of free yoga videos on her website and I really like doing them at home. If you've been around here for awhile you might remember that time I went to Hot Yoga at my gym and almost met Jesus earlier than I intended.
Needless to say, I thought perhaps before I jumped into a studio again, I might need to get practice at home. Of course, when you do yoga at home you can technically wear one of your son's tshirts and pajama pants. I have done this many times. However, I thought I might be more motivated if I looked cuter, so I ordered this two pack of yoga open back tops. They are long enough to be worn untied over leggings or you can knot them in the back. The material is so soft and the best news is that they are only $18.50 for two. Also, depending on the colors you choose, you can click the coupon box to get an additional 16% off. PS I'm not the boss of you, but it doesn't seem like you have to being doing yoga to wear these tops. I mean, it's not a law.
2. THE BEST No Show Socks
I have tried so many brands of "no show" socks and have been so frustrated because they all inevitably slip down and end up bunched up in the bottom of my shoe. I've tried name brands like Nike and Vans and always end up throwing them away. I actually thought that truly good socks were like unicorns, until I found the unicorns! These PEDS Women's Lasertrim Unseen Midcut Socks are the absolute best. They are completely unseen and I wore them with two different pairs of shoes all day this week and they did not slip one time. They are only $12.97 for six pairs.
3. The Chair
The Chair is on Netflix and is only six 30 minutes episodes. It's about a woman who becomes the chair of the English department at a prestigious college and all the personalities and challenges she faces in her new role. The actors in this show are perfectly cast and I fell in love with all of them. My favorite two are probably the oldest and the youngest members of the cast. Holland Taylor is so fantastic as a 30 year veteran professor. The little girl who plays the chair's daughter is amazingly talented and hilarious. I love a show that doesn't demand months of my time. I started it Tuesday and finished it Wednesday. Highly recommend.
4. A Coffee Mug for the 2021-2022 School Year
My pastor's sermon series this fall is focused on The 10 Commandments. I guess that's why this coffee mug caught my eye. Or maybe it's because for many of us these early mornings of getting kids off to school are a bit hard to get used to after a year of wearing pjs for the majority of the day. (Or in the case of one kid I know, a sophomore year spent barely ever wearing a shirt.) I think this perhaps was the 11th Commandment proposed by Moses's wife. Just barely missed the cut.
5. Friday Night Lights

By far my very favorite thing of the week was going to our high school's first football game of the season. I love football anyway, but this year it seems so much more special - just as so many of the things that we missed out on last year do. Our high school's football team has historically been . . . um . . . let's just say not especially successful. But Friday night you would have thought we were welcoming the State Champion Dillion Panthers to the field. Our student section was full and even when it started pouring rain those kids stood in the bleachers and cheered their fool heads off.
It was so normal and so fun and they looked so happy that it almost brought tears to my eyes. All I could think was, "Please don't let this be taken from them again. Please let them have this."
This is a problem I have and it might be one we collectively have these days. I think we all are walking around wondering when the other shoe is going to drop. Especially when closets full of really ugly shoes seem to keep dropping every time we turn around. It's understandable, but it's something I think we have to fight really hard against. Being present in the moment is not a new concept. But it's certainly one I need to take very seriously of late.
In a passage titled "Today" Frederick Buechner writes, "In the entire history of the universe, let alone in our own history, there has never been another just like it and there will never be another just like it again. It is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leading since the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all your tomorrows will proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware of how precious it is, you could hardly live through it. Unless you are aware of how precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living at all. . . All other days have either disappeared into darkness and oblivion or not yet emerged from them. Today is the only day there is.
"This is the day the Lord has made., says the 118th Psalm. "Let us rejoice and be glad in it" Or weep and be sad in it. The point is to see it for what it is because it will be gone before you know it. If you waste it, it is your life you're wasting."
My thoughts were so focused on worrying about the possibility that this moment was going to be stolen from our students and our community that I almost missed a kick off return for a touchdown. Thank goodness, I looked up just in time.
PS We won.
Today I pray that you'll have more rejoicing and being glad than weeping and being sad. Let's start by watching Paul Rudd dance one more time. I think it's the right move. After all, today is the only day there is.
