5 Friday Favorites: January 20, 2023

It's time for my Friday link up with  A Little Bit of Everything and Momfessionals

On Fridays I share things that made me happy from the week - a photo, a song, a quote, a beauty product, a recipe, a pair of cute shoes, etc. If it's a product, sometimes it's something I actually own and sometimes something I just saw online that gave me a smile. Sometimes it's serious and sometimes it's silly. I suppose I believe that God is in the simple details of life and yes, I can even find Him in a tube of lipstick.

Good morning. Besides the fact that  we went to Charlotte last weekend to visit my son who works at Wingate University outside of the city, it's been a pretty basic week. January doesn't generally lend itself to a whole lot of excitement, does it? Still, Charlotte was a cool city with great restaurants and anytime I can hang out with one of my boys who doesn't live with me anymore, everything in the world seems better.

Here are some other things I liked this week.

1. JCrew Outlet Plaid Smocked Ruffle Neck Top

My birthday was on Saturday, so the guys found the outlets in Charlotte and sacrificed their afternoon to shop with me. Ironically, the guys all left the place with shopping bags full and I left with a candle. When you're 54 sometimes the only thing that fits right is a candle. (Insert sad trombone) JCrew Factory Outlet did have this really cute top in the blue plaid and also a pinkish-red stripe, but not in my size. I think it would be so cute in the spring.

2. I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

I love reading memoirs. My boys watched ICarly all the darn time when they were little, so I knew who Jennette McCurdy was, but if you would have told me I would end up reading a book by Sam from ICarly all these years later, I would have thought you were nuts. I keep seeing it at the top of Best Seller lists and have heard her interviewed, so I started it this week. Of course, the title is harsh, but this memoir is fascinating, heartbreaking, and actually really funny. Sometimes the writing in celebrity memoirs can make me cringe, but not so in this case. She is a very talented writer. I'm not finished yet, but this is a good one.

3. Chicken Pot Pie

My friend, Karen, made this Chicken Pot Pie, for our Book Club dinner the other night and I am not exaggerating when I say it was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my live long life. I do not feel confident at all that I can recreate this masterpiece, but I'm going to try.

4. Coastal Wide Matte Silver Gold Ring

The Coastal Ring from Park Lane is so cool. The matte silver wide band is open in the back and the thinner gold band goes all the way around. I think this would look great on a pointer or middle finger.

5. Two out of Three Ain't Bad

We missed Kyle, but I had a great time with these two jokers and the joker I married 28 years ago. I continue to have so many thoughts and feelings around parenting young adults. It's a really fascinating and truly fun season. It's also a time when I'm not necessarily full of fear, but the uncertainty can be a little unsettling. Personally, I've happened to notice that, as with most things, it seems to be more or less unsettling depending on the time of the month it is. ;-) Anyway, disappointments and struggles will keep coming and the triumphs will as well. It's hard to look past those first ones to know that the triumph just might be right on the heels of the disappointment. I heard this from Kelly Corrigan last week and I sent it to my kids this morning. It's a pretty simple concept, but it applies to them. It also applies to me.

"You do not know how long the story you're in is going to last. There might be a surprising chapter coming your way."

(Also, by the way, if you assume that my children weep with joy at the wisdom their mom imparts to them through early morning texts, you would be mistaken. If I get a thumbs up emoji, it's a win.)

Y'all have a good weekend. Stick with the story. You don't know what's coming.
