Friday Favorites: October 18, 2019

Happy Friday, Friends!

It's time for my Friday link up with A Little Bit of EverythingGrace and Love, and Momfessionals

On Fridays I share things that made me happy from the week - a photo, a song, a quote or Bible verse, a beauty product, a recipe, a pair of cute shoes, etc. If it's a product, sometimes it's something I actually own and sometimes something I just saw online that gave me a smile. Sometimes it's serious and sometimes it's silly. I suppose I believe that God is in the simple details of life and yes, I can even find Him in a tube of lipstick.

1. Y'all Long Sleeve Tee

I love this long sleeve tee from Aerie. I understand that not everyone is as classy as I am and might not use sophisticated vernacular like "y'all", so in that case there are other colors with other words and graphics. The tee is crazy soft and very much oversized, so I'd order one size down if you get it. It's 30% off right now. I wore it with leggings for my 7 hour drive home from Knoxville last weekend and didn't even change out of it to jump into my bed. It's that comfortable.

2. Instant Pot
Country Style Pork Ribs

I got an instant pot for Christmas and it had been sitting in the box for months. Then last week I bought some country style pork ribs on sale, so I decided it was finally time to use the Instant Pot.

(If you haven't fallen asleep yet, please continue to read this compelling story.)

This is the instant pot I have. It's great. The ribs were amazing. I got the recipe HERE, but I'll type it out for you because clearly I want to continue to bore the fire out of you on this lovely Friday.

3 lbs. Country Style Pork Ribs
1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar
1 teaspoon each: Paprika, Salt, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Pepper, Cumin
1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
3/4 cup Beef Broth or water
1/2 cup BBQ Sauce (and extra if desired)

1. Mix dry ingredients together and rub on pork ribs - both sides. Pour beef broth into instant pot, place ribs in, and pour BBQ sauce on top.
2. Lock lid on pressure cooker. Cook on manual, high heat for 45 minutes. After cooking, use the natural release method which will take about 15-20 minutes.
3. Remove ribs. Serve with extra BBQ sauce.

(NOTE: LISTEN TO ME: Frankly, the instant pot kinda scares me because I always think it's going to blow up and people will think I'm running some kind of sketchy meth lab in my kitchen. READ THE DIRECTIONS ON YOUR POT. Don't rely on my instruction. Thank you.)

3. Wit and Wisdom
Itty Bitty Bootcut Jeans

While visiting the University of Tennessee I found that the 70s vibe is real strong among the girls. I saw numerous young ladies wearing very wide leg bell bottom jeans and cropped tops. I even saw quite a few wearing bright white boots - kind of a mix between Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and John Travolta. I cannot quite get on board with the really wide bell bottoms, but I am here for the return of the bootcut or a flared hem. I bought these jeans in the spring and they are by far my very favorite pair of jeans in my closet. They are great for girls with short legs like yours truly. These are soft and stretchy - the most comfortable jeans I own - and I think with wedges or heeled boots they definitely make your legs look longer. They're also pretty reasonably priced.

4. Stadium-Approved Clear Crossbody Purse

I'd like to give a big shout-out to all the terroists who have made it necessary for us girls to have to bring clear purses to sports stadiums these days so that the whole world can see that we're carrying around tampons. Thanks a lot, you big ol' jerks.

If you haven't been to a college or professional game recently you might not be aware that you aren't allowed to bring in bags over a certain size and often they must be both small and clear so that security can see through them easily. I remembered that I needed a stadium purse only three days before we were set to go to Knoxville for the Tennessee football game. Thank goodness, I found this cute thing on Amazon for only $19.99 and Prime had it at my door the very next day. It comes in a whole lot of colors with a long gold chain strap. I'm used to carrying a really big tote bag so it was hard to figure out what would fit. In the end, this held my iPhone, a charger, my id and a credit card, a couple of lipsticks and our tickets. Not a lot, but exactly what I needed. It's much more fashionable than bringing a ziploc bag into the game.

5. 5 Skinners in Tennessee

The whole darn family went to Knoxville for Parents Weekend and I could not stop smiling the entire time. (Well, except for when we watched Texas lose to Oklahoma. Huge bummer.) Joe was able to come with us, so it was a Mom's dream come true to have everyone in the same place for a couple of days. We visited Kyle's fraternity house, met some of his new friends, watched Tennessee beat Mississippi State, spent some time at Steve's cousin's beautiful home on Lake Loudoun, and Drew and I worked on our selfie skills.

I had been looking so forward to the weekend, so I started to feel pretty low on Sunday when it was all over, but I made myself push that away. My children assure me (because I've asked them a zillion times in a zillion ways) that they are truly, genuinely happy in their new spaces. They have friends and purpose and bright futures ahead of them. I do not take those blessings for granted and I am deeply, humbly grateful for a God who walks beside them when I cannot.

It was a darn good week around here. I hope you had a good one, too. Happy Friday, Friends.
