5 Friday Favorites: May 10, 2019

Happy Friday, Friends.

It's time for my Friday link up with A Little Bit of EverythingGrace and Love, and Momfessionals

On Fridays I share things that made me happy from the week - a photo, a song, a quote, a beauty product, a recipe, a pair of cute shoes, etc. If it's a product, sometimes it's something I actually own and sometimes something I just saw online that gave me a smile. Sometimes it's serious and sometimes it's silly. I suppose I believe that God is in the simple details of life and yes, I can even find Him in a tube of lipstick.

1. Rachel Held Evans

I follow and read a lot of female writers whose work generally falls in spaces referred to by Amazon as "Christian Inspiration", "Christian Women's Issues" or "Religion and Spirituality". Whatever you call the genre, there are some very gifted, smart, incredibly well-educated women out there writing interesting and thought-provoking words about the Bible and Jesus and the Church.

Rachel Held Evans was one of these women and if you follow any of her colleagues and friends as I have, you know that she died tragically and suddenly at the age of 37 last week leaving behind a husband, Dan, and two children under four years old. I had read some articles by Rachel and have heard her on podcasts over the years, but had never actually read her books, so I ordered one of her most famous, A Year of Biblical Womanhood, this week. I remember laughing when I first heard about this book because at one point Rachel apparently stood at in front of her hometown of Dayton's "Welcome to Dayton" highway sign with a posterboard that said, "Dan is awesome!" since Proverbs 31 says that the ideal woman's husband is praised at the city gate.

Seems to me that not only her family and friends, but a whole lot of strangers have suffered an enormous loss with her passing. I'm thinking she had a lot more to say to urge us to really dig in to Scripture, to think, to study, to discuss it with each other, and even better to laugh a little bit. Sounds like my kinda girl. :(

2. Breakthrough Movie

Since Joe is home and hasn't started his internship yet, I have a movie buddy during the day, so we went to see Breakthrough yesterday. It stars Chrissy Metz from This is Us as well as Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, and the guy from the All-State commercials. It's an amazing true story and we really liked it. It's going to rain all weekend here, so it might be a good weekend for a movie. The whole family can see this one.

3. Unisa Brok Platform Sandal

My favorite sandals of all time are a pair of black cork platform wedges from Tom's that are tragically not available anymore. I wore those flat out over the last few years, so I needed some new black sandals. I found these at DSW the other day, bought them, hopped in the car, and put them on my feet right away. They are really comfortable, cute, and only $39.99.

4. Jalapeno Cashews

Listen. I have never claimed that my Friday Favorites was a profound list of things that would change your life. However, I will say that these jalapeno cashews did in fact change the course of my Monday this week. I was starving because I hadn't eaten much all day and was on my way to a baseball game when I had to stop for gas. I grabbed a small bag of these at 7-11 real quick on the way and apparently I loved them so much that they were one of my five favorite things from this entire week. Also, I can't stop thinking about them which is weird, but true.

5. Baseball Season, of course

Baseball season is in full swing around here and I love it so much. I've got one baseball player left in my family and I am cherishing the next four years because I know full well how fast they will go. We've had lots of rain, but some how got lucky this week to have clear skies on game days.

I got to see three ball games this week and there's a tournament this weekend because Mother's Day isn't Mother's Day without baseball around here. Unfortunately, I'll have to watch my kid on Gamechanger which is one of my favorite inventions of all time because I can't make it to the tournament. It's going to be pretty weird not to be on a ball field celebrating Mother's Day without my friends and my kids.

Also, I want to wish a very happy Mother's Day to the best person I know. I love you to the centerfield wall and back.

Lastly, to all of you for whom Mother's Day brings longing, pain, grief, and sadness, I am holding you in my heart this weekend. One of my best friends will spend her first Mother's Day without her mom this year. The children of my friend, Cindy, who we lost in July, will do the same. My many friends who have lost children will suffer through the day without their babies. There are those women who have endured infertility who wait and wait and wait. Forgive us when our posts or words or traditions make you seem less than or forgotten. When we humans are insensitive, remember that the Lord does not forget you. You are cherished, loved, and valued by Him. I hope you feel that this weekend. And it might help to grab some jalapeno cashews just in case. :-)

Have a good one, Friends!
