5 Friday Favorites: May 15, 2020

It's time for my Friday link up with A Little Bit of Everything and Momfessionals

On Fridays I share things that made me happy from the week - a photo, a song, a quote or Bible verse, a beauty product, a recipe, a pair of cute shoes, etc. If it's a product, sometimes it's something I actually own and sometimes something I just saw online that gave me a smile. Sometimes it's serious and sometimes it's silly. I suppose I believe that God is in the simple details of life and yes, I can even find Him in a tube of lipstick.

Well would you look at that? We made it through another week. I actually feel like March and April lasted seventeen years, but May seems to be flying by. This past week was my favorite of the quarantine because we were able to go down to Knoxville, Tennessee to move my son out of his dorm. He had come home for Spring Break on March 13th and before the break was over the kids were told they couldn't come back. At the beginning of the month the University announced that students could make appointments to move out in May since Knoxville is partially open now. Which brings me to my favorite thing, not only of this week, but of the past nine weeks.

1. I Went to a Restaurant and They Served Me a Can Full of Wine

The moving out of the dorm was not my favorite part because if you haven't heard boys are so gross. My favorite part was that we were able to go to a restaurant in Knoxville and sit there.

If you're unacquainted with such a term, according to Merriam-Webster:

res - taur - ant (noun)  /rest (ə) rənt/: a business establishment where meals or refreshments may be purchased.

Steve, Kyle and I all had meals and refreshments and I promise you that you have never seen more excited people in the world. Not all of these business establishments were open and the ones that were allowed only 25-50% capacity. All the staff wore masks and there were lots of tables marked off in between tables where humans sat. We honestly didn't see a lot of people out, but we did see some and they were not related to us and it was glorious. I was smiling so much I felt like a crazy person. Especially when they served me a can full of wine called a Porch Pounder. What a life, y'all.

The world is still out there full of real people. And I think most of those people aren't conspiracy theorists and aren't politicizing this whole thing to death. I think most people are doing their very best to stay safe and be kind and live well. It was a lovely thing to see.

And then we washed our hands like maniacs.

2. The Mindy Project

I got a month free trial of Hulu recently just so I could watch Little Fires Everywhere. Since I finished that, I looked around to see what else Hulu offered and I was so excited to see The Mindy Project. Mindy Kaling's books were two of my favorite memoirs, so I knew I'd probably like her show. I'm just through half of the first season and I am loving it. It is laugh - out - loud funny. I think Mindy Kaling is one of the smartest comic writers we've got and she's as charming as she is witty. This show is a gem and the perfect remedy to one of those days when you feel like the world is falling apart. (Hopefully, that's not just happening to me?)

If you haven't read her memoirs, read this one first.

And then read this one. You won't be sorry.

3. Air Pods Cases

Since I am old, I did not know that Air Pods Cases were a thing. I didn't even have Air Pods because I didn't understand why they were a thing either. What was wrong with the corded ear buds?

Even though we don't want to admit it, sometimes the next generation knows better than we do. My boys gave me Air Pods for Mother's Day and now I realize why they are a thing. I can walk freely around my house doing all the things while listening to a podcast without having to carry my phone around with me. Also, I can clean up my kitchen without a wire getting stuck on a drawer pull causing me to suffer whip lash several times a day. I can go running without looking like this:

The most fun part of my Air Pods though is that Drew found a Texas Longhorn case for them. Who knew there was such a thing as customized Air Pod Case? NOT ME, that's who! Amazon has a ton of cute cases here. They are wholly unnecessary, but I think they're so much fun. And fun is not easy to come by these days.

4. My New Running Shoes

It is May 15th today. It was four years ago today that the world lost our friend, Tom. I've written here before about how since that day, I buy new running shoes on May 15th every year. The day after he died I was in a haze of grief and confusion as were so many in our community. Since Tom and I used to pass each other running in the neighborhood a lot, I decided maybe I would go buy some new shoes. When the employee brought me purple shoes to try on, I broke down in tears, sobbing about how much I hated purple. I couldn't really spit out what the real problem was. It was as awkward as you might imagine.

Anyway, this is my thing now in May and these are my new shoes this year. I obviously couldn't go into the running store this time, so my people bought them for me for Mother's Day and they came right on time. They are not purple. They are the lightest grey color - almost white - with a tortoise shell swoop. They are the most perfect shoes. And they make me smile. And so did Tom. He was a good man and his family deserved to have him for longer than they did.The world deserved to have  him longer than it did. Please pray for Tom's people today.

5. The Psalms

I've spent a lot of time reading the Psalms since this whole mess began. I was so happy to see that our Pastor just recently started a sermon series on the Psalms as well. This week he focused on Psalm 139 and you can listen to his sermon from last Sunday here. It was a beautiful message. I highly recommend it if you have time.

Reading the Bible can be intimidating, but I find that the Psalms aren't so. I know when this season is over, there will be certain things that will stand out to me. I'm pretty sure I'll remember that in the Spring of 2020 when I was scared and unsure and when God felt far away, I found Him in the Psalms. He relentlessly pursues us. He won't let us go. What an awesome gift.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

Have a blessed weekend, Friends.
